Work Sites: Final Trip 14/14 ~ Wilson Dam FINAL SITE

Wilson Dam

How ironic and poetic! It wasn't explicitly planned to end this way, but this is how the entire journey closes: at Wilson Dam, where it all began. Our organization's history officially started when we took over Wilson Dam and built our generation legacy around it. Fittingly, it stands as the final site of my year-long journey.

I will be completely honest: I prefer the architecture of Wilson Dam over all the others. The powerhouse looks absolutely amazing. It is the ONLY Neoclassical dam in existence! I reckon it isn't easy or cheap to maintain ornate classical masonry on a massive dam, which is probably why it wasn't duplicated throughout the rest of the river valley. But it is a breathtaking sight.

Architectural Wonder: Wilson's design integrates grand themes of ancient Greek and Roman architecture into its massive concrete structure, making it look more like a monumental government palace or ancient temple than a hydro station. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

To roll up on my motorcycle, cut the engine, and gaze up at this historic masterpiece as the absolute final checkmark on my list was an incredible feeling. Every single facility visited across seven states in just over a year.

I am done. Wow. What an amazing ride!
