Gleason Combustion Plant
It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon when I geared up, fired up the bike, and set off on a relaxing three-hour ride toward the very first site of this leg. The road out to Gleason, Tennessee, gives you that classic open-country feeling-smooth asphalt winding past fields, quiet woodlines, and small rural communities.
Finding the facility turned out to be an adventure in itself. I should have seen this site during my Kentucky trip, then again in my previous attempt at this trip. Now the plant that tried to hide from me finally got found! The Gleason plant is nestled right outside the main town, tucked away behind tree lines and landscape topography so naturally that unless you knew exactly where to look, you could drive right past it without ever realizing an industrial generating station was sitting just beyond the trees.
When I pulled up to the gate, I was genuinely surprised by the level of activity. It was a Sunday afternoon, but the parking area and facility grounds were bustling with workers and site personnel. We were leading into a severe, multi-day heatwave across the region, and grid preparedness was clearly on tap.When extreme temperatures hit, air conditioning loads across the multi-state region skyrocket. Facility crews weren't taking any chances- they were proactively making sure every system, turbine, and mechanical control was checked, tested, and primed for action.
The history of the site itself is pretty compelling. Gleason was originally constructed by SNC-Lavalin (the international engineering firm now known as AtkinsRéalis). Our enterprise officially purchased the plant on December 17, 2006, integrating it into our broader generation portfolio.What makes a simple-cycle combustion turbine facility like Gleason so essential to grid stability comes down to agility. Unlike massive coal or nuclear stations, which require hours or even days to slowly heat up, bring steam systems online, and synchronize with the grid, combustion plants operate on a completely different operational dynamic.
Key Technical Insight: Simple-cycle combustion turbines operate similarly to jet engines. When electrical demand across the region is low, the plant stays dark and quiet. But when grid demand suddenly spikes, this plant can go from zero to 100% generating capacity in a matter of minutes, delivering rapid emergency power precisely when it's needed most.
Standing near the perimeter on my bike, watching the crew prepare for the extreme week ahead, gave me a whole new appreciation for these 'hidden' peaker plants.
