A magical journey deep inside one of America’s most stunning underground waterfalls and then up Lookout Mountain on the famous Incline Railway. Perfect half-day adventure — and I got to share it with you!

Ruby Falls is one of those rare natural wonders that feels almost otherworldly. This 145-foot underground waterfall sits 260 feet beneath the surface of Lookout Mountain inside a beautiful limestone cave system — and it’s the tallest and deepest underground waterfall open to the public in the United States. Discovered accidentally in 1928 by Leo Lambert while drilling for an elevator shaft, he named it after his wife Ruby when he brought her back to see it.

The guided cave tour takes you along easy walking paths past incredible stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations. The grand finale is standing in front of the thundering Ruby Falls itself, lit in ever-changing colors. The cave stays a steady ~60°F year-round — bring a light jacket!

Riding the Famous Incline Railway

After the cave, we hopped on one of the world’s steepest passenger railways — the historic Lookout Mountain Incline Railway. Operating since 1895, this funicular climbs at a jaw-dropping 72.7% grade. The ride is about a mile long and takes roughly 10 minutes each way. As the yellow car ascends, you get sweeping views of Chattanooga, the Tennessee River, and the whole valley unfolding below you.

At the top you’re rewarded with mountain vistas and easy access to other Lookout Mountain attractions. It’s smooth, fun, and perfect for families or anyone who loves a classic scenic thrill.

Combining Ruby Falls and the Incline Railway makes for the perfect half-day (or full-day) adventure on Lookout Mountain. Both are family-friendly with accessibility options and showcase some of Tennessee’s most spectacular natural beauty.
