Work Sites: Wilbur and Watauga
Wilbur and Watauga dams. I came for one and found the other.
Well sort of. It wasn’t until I was there that I realized that Watauga was down
the road. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Wilbur is the oldest TVA dam.
Originally built in 1917, it was rebuilt in 1952. It’s an impressive dam. It
was releasing water while I was there.
Another site that the ride almost overtook the site. The scenery
was just so beautiful.
After hanging out for a bit and enjoying the sights and
sounds, and parking in front of the entrance to the road over the dam
(authorized personnel only) and having to move quickly for said authorized
personnel. I continued on to see Watauga. Or at least try!
And try I did, but it happens that since 9/11 the road over Watauga has been closed to the public. You can get to the overlook and see the sights but unfortunately you cannot ride to the dam. I was quite upset about that. But you get what you get and you don’t pitch a fit.
There were some good shots from the overlook though. I’ll take it!
